Omnilux Blue and Omnilux Revive

What is Omnilux and how does it work?

Omnilux is a high intensity Diode light system which produces safe natural light . There is no harmful UVA or UVB present. This light source has been used in hospital dermatology and oncology departments for more than 15 years for the treatment of non- melanoma skin cancer.

The P.acnes bacteria that was mentioned earlier produces chemicals called porphyrins, which are sensitive to light at different wavelengths. Omnilux Blue stimulates these chemicals and causes them to neutralise the P.acnes bacteria. In other words it acts as a catalyst to kill the bacteria, and with no bacteria present inflammation and redness will subside. This is combined with Omnilux Revive, a pure visible, red light which also has anti-inflammatory properties. Revive stimulates the body's natural repair mechanism improving skin tone and texture.

How safe is the treatment?

The light is safe and harmless to your skin. The light works naturally with your body to promote the healing response. The only safety measure needed is to wear goggles to protect your eyes from the bright light.

Am I suitable for Omnilux?

Most people are suitable. It is fine if you are tanned and suitable for all skin types. There are a few medications following which you need to leave a couple of weeks before commencing Omnilux. Your practitioner can advise you at consultation. Following a course of Roaccutane a 2 week gap is recommended.

What results can be expected from a series of treatments?

Optimum results are seen 12 weeks after treatment begins, however results start to be seen fairly soon after commencement. The light stimulates natural processes that carry on even after the treatment course has finished. Clinical trials have shown an improvement of 81% and improvement can carry on for 3-6 months after the course is complete.

Combining Omnilux with Glycolic and Salycilic acid peels is recommended for maximum results.

Are there any side effects? What will I see?

No. There are no reported side effects like prolonged redness or irritation from the treatment , and the light does not damage the skin in any way. As Omnilux Revive is also used for skin rejuvenation then in many cases fine lines and wrinkles will be improved, a nice side effect for middle-aged acne sufferers. In trials subjects report an overall hydrating and lifting effect, an improvement in skin tone and texture and an evening- out of pigmentation.

Is it painful?

Not at all, in fact most people drift off to sleep as it is an extremely soothing and comfortable treatment.
