Thread Veins

Known as broken veins, thread veins or Telangiectasia. Small, unsightly superficial red, purple or blue veins occur over the cheeks, nose and chin. The exact cause is often unknown, although sun damage, age and hereditary factors play a part. They may be due to a condition called rosacea which is also sometimes associated with acne. This can cause a tendency to blush easily or become red quickly in warm conditions or when eating certain foods. Campbell de Morgan spots are small red spots that can appear anywhere on the body. Spider Naevi can also be treated. Intense Pulsed Light and laser is very effective in the treatment of all of these problems.

How are thread veins treated?

Our IPL and laser systems emit specific wavelengths of light which are readily absorbed by blood vessels, heating them to the point of destruction. Following treatment the vessels quickly clear as they are reabsorbed into the body, leaving little or no trace of the original lesion.

How is the treatment carried out?

For IPL treatments a thin layer of chilled gel is applied to aid absorbtion of the light by the vessel. The light is then pulsed over the whole area to be treated. Cooling air helps with any discomfort. Afterwards the gel is removed and cooling aloe vera is applied along with sun screen if the area is to be exposed to sunlight. This is because the skin will be more sunlight sensitive following treatment. A similar process without the application of gel is carried out with the laser. Your practitioner will decide which is the best treatment for you.

How many sessions will I need?

Typically 3 to 4 sessions are needed although individual lesions may clear after a single one. For larger areas of general redness and rosacea around 6 sessions may be required.. Generally sessions are spaced every 4 weeks.

How long will each session last?

We find on average most clients need around a 15 minute session of laser, but allow half an hour for your appointment.

How long do results last?

Some vessels may disappear immediately and then re -appear a few days later, but will be less prominent. Improvement is seen after each treatment. With further treatment these vessels will disappear and should not re-occur. However ,if you are prone to facial redness, you always will be, so more may appear in the future and will require further treatment. Results are long lasting however and more treatment may not be required for several years. To help prevent new veins appearing we strongly recommend the daily application of a mineral based sunblock, such as Heliocare.

What does the treatment feel like?

Most people describe the feeling as a very quick, warm pin prick sensation. Anaesthesia is not required, but we do cool the skin with chilled gel and cool air to minimise discomfort.

Are there any side effects?

A medical history will be taken at consultation to determine suitability. A full explanation will be given and you will be asked to sign a consent form. We can't treat you if you are sun tanned and recommend at least 2 -4 weeks following a holiday before treatment. Likewise we don't recommend you go away to the sun for a couple of weeks following a treatment. We always advise application of a minimum of factor 30 , preferably factor 50 of a mineral sunblock to the face whilst on holiday. This will help prevent further skin damage by the sun. Pregnancy , breast feeding and certain medications contraindicate with IPL treatment.

Following treatment you should expect your skin to feel a little warm and tingly, occasionally the face can be a little swollen for a few hours . You will be given a post treatment care sheet to follow to minimise the risk of any side effects. A test patch must be carried out at least 48 hours before a full treatment.
