What is Medical Skin Needling (Dermaroller)?

Skin Needling (also known as Dermaroller) is the latest skin renewal technique to restore healthy youthful appearance of your skin and reduce scarring with minimal downtime compared with other procedures. Skin Needling can provide excellent results but is much less invasive and does not require the removal of the epidermis. As a result the healing time is significantly shorter and there is no post-treatment skin sensitivity to UV light.

The titanium dermaroller is a convenient multipurpose device used for the treatment of various skin conditions such as acne scarring, fine lines, enlarged pores, hyper-pigmentation or just improving skin radiance.

Skin Needling is also one of the few skin therapies that are suitable for treating all skin types, including darker skin types, and which can be used to treat the fragile skin around the eyes, mouth and on the neck.

What type/depth of Dermaroller do I need?

To achieve a successful reduction of acne scarring and other conditions such as enlarged pores and fine lines,  a minimum depth of 1.0-1.5mm is required which can only be administered in a professional clinical environment. Although home use dermarollers are available (0.2-0.3mm) on the market, these do not penetrate deep enough into the skin to achieve a significant result. At Laserlife Clinic, we only use a professional depth of at least 1.0mm for acne scarring.

How does it work?

The concept of Skin Needling (also known as Collagen Induction Therapy) is based on the skin’s natural ability to repair itself whenever it encounters physical damage such as cuts, burns and other abrasions.

Immediately after an injury occurs to the skin our body reuses the damaged collagen and elastin fibres as well as other damaged skin components to produce new ones.

Skin Needling allows for controlled induction of the skin’s self repair mechanism by creating micro-‘injuries’ in the skin which trigger new collagen synthesis, yet does not pose the risk of permanent scarring. The result is smoother, firmer and younger looking skin.

How is the treatment administered?

Skin Needling procedures are performed in a very safe and accurate manner with the use of sterile single-use Medik8 Titanium Dermaroller. The procedure is normally complete within 30 minutes.

Once the skin has been cleansed, the practitioner will gently roll the titanium dermaroller over your skin to puncture the outermost layers of the skin and create miniscule sub-cutaneous injuries. These microscopic wounds stimulate new collagen deposition which may last for up to a year, yet they close within less than an hour.

For deeper treatments (above 1.0mm), an anesthetic will be applied for up to an hour prior to the procedure to numb the surface of the skin.

How will I look immediately after the treatment?

After the procedure your skin will be red and flushed in appearance in a similar way as a moderate sunburn. You will also experience skin tightness and mild sensitivity to touch.

This will diminish greatly after a few hours following the treatments and within the next 48 hours your skin will be completely healed. After 2 days there is barely any evidence that the procedure has taken place. The length of downtime and recovery time depends on the micro-needle size used for treatment. You will be informed about your predicted post-treatment appearance during consultation.

How quickly will I see results?

Visible signs of scar, pores and line reduction are seen after just 6-8 weeks following procedure and continue for up to a year.

A course of 3 sessions, at 6-8 week intervals, is usually recommended for Dermaroller treatments above 1.0mm to achieve optimum results; however, you will notice great skin improvement after just one treatment. For Dermaroller treatment using 0.5mm, a course of 6 sessions is recommended.

How should I care for my skin during and after treatment?

Topical application of Medik8 C-Tetra (vitamin C) and Retinol 3TR (vitamin A) will lead to a dramatic acceleration of regenerative processes and consolidation of procedure results. This will be applied after the procedure at no extra cost.
