Laser Tattoo Removal

Laser Tattoo Removal

There are many reasons for wanting to fade or remove a tattoo. Laser is the most effective and remains the gold standard as recommended by dermatologists. At the Aesthetic Laser Clinic we have an Active Q-Switched ND Yag laser (AQS), which is very effective in removing all colours of ink. Many clinical trials have proved that Q Switched laser is effective , reliable and importantly safe.

How does laser work?

As tattoo ink is injected into the skin it becomes encapsulated in a band of collagen which is too large to be removed by the body's natural defences. AQS lasers generate a very powerful burst of light in an extremely short pulse. This pulse of light shatters the tattoo ink into small particles which the natural immune defences of the body can absorb and disperse.

What should I expect during the treatment?

Prior to treatment a full medical history will be taken, including the provenance of the tattoo. This can have a bearing on how many treatments it will take. Generally amateur tattoos are easier to remove. You will be asked to sign a consent form .

During treatment cold air will be constantly blown over the area to minimise discomfort. Immediately after the ink will blanch or turn white. This is due to gases escaping from the skin. The sensation is described as feeling like elastic bands being flicked on the skin, but it is bearable.

What will it feel like afterwards?

It will feel tender and may swell. A light dressing will be applied and cooling aloe vera gel. We advise the dressing is left on for 24 hours and replaced if necessary. Sometimes there is superficial bleeding as a graze is caused. Occasionally a blister is formed. In this case a dressing will be needed if it pops. You will be given a post treatment advice form with instructions on how to look after your skin following tattoo removal.

Are there any side effects?

You must not have any form of sun tan before laser treatment for tattoo removal. Often this treatment is best carried out during the winter months. Some clients find it easier to cover the tattoo completely or use a complete sun block during the summer months if they want to carry on with sessions. If you follow post treatment advice, side effects are unlikely. Occasionally temporary pigmentary changes can occur. We ask you to contact us straight away following your treatment if you have any concerns.

How many treatments will I need?

This varies depending on the age, size, depth, type of ink etc. We can give you an idea and you are welcome to pop in any time for an assessment and quote. Usually a minimum of 6 but up to 12 sessions are required. If you merely want fading, so a different design can be drawn ,then 4 to 6 sessions are usually enough.

R20 tattoo removal

This is a relatively new form of removing tattoos. It uses the same laser and technology but the sessions are longer. After the first pass of the laser is carried out over the tattoo and the blanching appears, we wait for 20 minutes. During this time Omnilux Revive natural diode light can be applied to stimulate the healing process. The process is then repeated to a total of 3 times. A dressing is applied as normal. A clinical paper it attached which explains in more detail. Results are very good so far and tattoos are clearing in a couple of sessions. Please call for prices.
