Cosmetic Injections

Fillers

Various injectable products can be used to plump out nose to mouth lines and deeper wrinkles, or to enhance lips for a plumper more youthful appearance. Facial contouring can also be achieved by replacing lost collagen, helping you to look younger naturally.

Facial wrinkling begins to appear as the underlying collagen and elastin fibres begin to break and wear down. This process is part of the natural ageing process and begins after the age of about 25, but a number of factors such as smoking and sun damage can accelerate collagen breakdown.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Most of the facial filling products used at the Aesthetic Laser Clinic contain non-animal, stabilised hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in the body. This means that once in the skin it works together with the body's own hyaluronic acid to create volume. No pre-testing is required and it is reassuring for those who have reservations about using a product derived from an animal source.

What areas can be treated?

The most commonly areas treated are the 'nose to mouth' lines, lines around the mouth or for shaping the cheeks and chin. Lip enhancement is also very popular.

How is treatment carried out?

The selected product is injected under the skin at dermis level with a very fine needle. The substance then replenishes the skin's natural volume, smoothing out lines and wrinkles thus helping to erase the signs of ageing. It is also used to enhance lips or fill lip lines.

What does treatment feel like?

The injections may be slightly uncomfortable , local anaesthetic cream is applied for half an hour prior to your treatment. Most of the Restylane products now contain a local anaesthetic to help minimise discomfort in more sensitive areas such as the lips. If you are nervous then in addition we can further numb the area with local infiltration of anaesthetic.

Muscle relaxing injections- Botulinum Toxin

Botox® is a well known and very popular treatment for treating lines and wrinkles that are caused by smiling, laughing and frowning. Botox minimises the muscle movement that cause these fine lines and furrows. Though once fashionable to “freeze” the muscles Botox® is now used more subtly to restore a more relaxed and youthful appearance.

Treatment is virtually painless and results are visible within a few days. Typically the benefits last for three to four months. In addition to the treatment of frown lines and wrinkles, Botox® can also be used to manage Excessive Sweating.

Our Botox treatments are all carried out by Dr Phil Terry, a very experienced General Practitioner, who is very skilled at injecting .

Botox may be used on its own or in conjunction with other skin rejuvenating treatments such as Skin Peels and Omnilux™ Light Therapy for greatest benefit.

How does Botox® work?

Botulinum Toxin relaxes the facial muscles that are connected to expression lines so that they cannot contract. It does this by blocking impulses from the nerve endings to the tiny facial muscles. After treatment, the overlying skin remains smooth and unwrinkled and the untreated facial muscles function normally.

Is Botox® treatment safe?

Botulinum Toxin injections have safely been used for many years to treat lines and wrinkles and also to manage many neurological and ophthalmological conditions. Tens of thousands of people have received Botulinum Toxin to relieve a variety of conditions and it is certainly a very popular anti-ageing treatment.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects to treatment are infrequent but some people experience some minor and temporary bruising at the injection site. Some people also report a mild, transient headache. A temporary drooping of the eyebrow or eyelid has also been reported, but is extremely rare.

What does treatment feel like?

The treatment involves a small number of tiny and practically painless injections. Immediately afterwards there may be some mild swelling that usually subsides within 24-48 hours

Which areas can be treated?

Muscle relaxing injections lead to a temporary weakening of the target muscle. This results in a reduction of the wrinkles above the target muscle. Examples include the deep crease or “frown” line between the eyebrows, wrinkles around the eyes or “crow’s feet” and any horizontal forehead lines. Used in the lower face it can reduce lipstick bleed lines and lessen “sad” lines which are the lines which lead down from the corners of the mouth.

It can be combined with fillers to create the overall desired younger and softer appearance.

Excessive sweating/Hyper-Hydrosis

Sweating is an important, natural bodily function to control body temperature. However, excessive sweating (Hyperhidrosis) is an embarrassing condition that affects a surprisingly large number of people. Heavy perspiration in the armpit area can be unsightly, uncomfortable, inhibit confidence and restrict one’s choice of what to wear.

The good news is that this condition is quickly and effectively treated using BOTOX® in the underarm area. A series of injections into both armpits will take less than half an hour and will stop excessive sweating for about 6 months. With repeated treatments, the results may even last longer.

What causes underarm sweating?

Excessive armpit sweating is called axillary hyperhidrosis. Some people are regularly troubled whilst others are only bothered when under stress, physically active or over-heated. The nerves that control sweating depend upon a chemical transmitter, which is produced at the end of the nerve fibres. BOTOX® is a neurotoxin which can block the release of the chemical transmitter for many months.

How is treatment carried out?

A harmless starch test to locate the sweat glands is carried out first. Afterwards, a very small needle is used to inject a small amount of BOTOX® into the skin. This is repeated in about 12 to 15 places on each underarm. You should avoid strenuous exercise for a few hours after treatment but can resume all other daily activities.

What results can I expect?

You should notice a decrease in the amount of underarm sweating within 48 hours. Studies have shown a 95% reduction. Full benefits are obtained one week after treatment.

Are there any risks or side effects?

There is a possibility of small bruises, which last only a few days. Occasionally, a second treatment may be required to reduce persistent areas of sweating.

Sculptra - The liquid face- lift

Sculptra is a unique facial filler. Unlike others it doesn’t just replace lost volume but it also encourages the skin to produce extra new collagen so the skin improves gradually over a period of time. Sculptra’s volumising effect and stimulation of new collagen restores lost facial volume and produces an overall more youthful and natural appearance. Generally a course of treatments is recommended to obtain optimal benefits. However, after the end of your Scupltra™ programme the results will last up to 2+ years.

What is Sculptra?

Sculptra is a poly-L-lactic acid, which is biodegradable and non-toxic. The product works gradually to produce a natural effect over two to three treatments. Clinical studies have shown that the results of Sculptra can last for more than 3 years.

What does the treatment involve?

Often from two to four sessions are required, depending upon the desired final outcome. At each visit several injections are performed in each of the treatment areas. Anaesthetic cream is applied beforehand, to reduce discomfort. At the end of the session, the area looks much fuller and plumper and generally improved but this is actually the effect of the fluid used to dissolve the filler. Within a few days the water in Sculptra™ is absorbed by the body so the wrinkles may appear more visible again. However, the second phase consists of a natural production of collagen which smoothes out wrinkles and contour defects. After approximately six weeks clear improvement is seen though for optimum results a course of treatment is recommended.

How often is the treatment carried out?

The sessions are carried out every four to six weeks and the improvement continues for up to six months after the last session.

Is it painful?

The injections are quite deep, so it can be uncomfortable. However, the filler is diluted with local anaesthetic, which drastically reduces the discomfort. Also, a very fine needle is used and we apply an anaesthetic gel prior to treatment.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects are short-lived but may include some tenderness and minor bleeding, redness, bruising or swelling at the injection site.
